1st National Meeting HispaPUG Mexico / PdaMéxico (The Story)

The event

Since the previous day (Friday November 19) some of the participants from foreign HispaPUGs arrived to the host hotel, to not miss any detail of the event.

That same night in a pleasant supper the reunion began, and finally alter months or even years of being friends over the Internet, the friendly nicks became friendly faces.

Ing. Armando Chávez and Mvz. José Luis García

On Saturday from 7 in the morning some participants arrived, and the joy that lasted until the end of the event began.

Some special devices, the first impression

The first thing that called the attention was that to register it wasn’t necessary to fill up any paper, two people had two Dana devices, you only had to “Beam” your business card and keep going. Business Cards were used as an entrance control measure and latter on to participate in raffles. It was a nice surprise to see the operation of the Dana devices. The ones that didn’t had their business card (there were a few) were promptly asked by their info and it was quickly captured via keyboard or touch screen in the Dana .

The ambient during the event was warm and of frank comradely

The organization

Organization was excellent, Jorge Pozzi and Rafael Labrada got a 10, the auditorium was ideal, technical questions such Audio and Video, and even the small coffee shop that was set up were excellent in every sense.

At the entrance of the event INCODE and pa1mOne Mexico stands were set up. Pa1mOne Mexico had 3 service technicians that were busy solving tour doubts. Among them Alberto Mateos, who is widely known in the Palm OS community, and Mrs. Blanca Cid, who has written some tutorials in PdaMéxico and HispaPUG México.

The president of HispaPUG Mexico

We had the “virtual” impression of the frank an open personality of Lic. Ricardo Hernández Canto, we weren’t wrong. Even if he refuses to accept it we all should recognize his labor.

The only “issue”

The only “issue” in the event was the unpunctuality of its start, (Unpunctual ones always deserve more attention and consideration than the ones that made an effort to be on time) situation that pushed back the entire event and obligated the organizers to rush a bit the Q&A sessions.

The start was also delayed in part because Ricardo Hernández tried to establish a connection with José Julio Ruiz, International President of HispaPUG, located in Madrid Spain, Sadly, the connection failed.

The National Meeting began

The event started with a letter from José Julio Ruiz (International President of HispaPUG) by that was read Rafael Labrada, alter that Ricardo Hernández began his presentation, he made an small resemblance of HispaPUG’s, HispaPUG’s México and PdaMéxico’s histories, to many it solved some doubts about the origins of the group.

MOBO Cases

Thanks to MOBO sponsorship every attendant got a MOBO case on the first day of the event.

The Presenters

The next presenter was Ing. Juan Manuel Ruiz of Telcel, even if his presentation was fluent, it hadn’t anything new to current users of the service, even more the presentation used images of older Palm OS versions, more than promote the use of the services he discouraged to contract.

Ing. Karla Serrano gave us a detailed explanation of the working of networks, and their diverse types, it was interesting, it was accompanied by a presentation about Bluetooth, also interesting and well developed by the presenter. Karla Serrano dominated the topic to the fullest, “Beauty and Technology hand by hand”

Conference about Bluetooth

The most expected presentation was the one by Ing. Mario Villarino of Pa1mOne México, his comments and precisions were in to the point and of general interest, his presentation right from his Treo 600, via Presenter to Go, was excellent, with detailed information. He presented current graphics about worldwide sales levels, the position of pa1mOne in Latin America. In contrast to Telcel’s presenter, Mr. Villarino anticipated all the questions and dominated his conference. At the end of the conference, attendants filled the scenario to at least get Ing. Mario Villarino’s business card.

The Break
Alter this conference there was a break. There were two hours to recover energies.

We took the chance to take photograph of pa1mOne Executives that accompanied us.

Lorena Albarrán, Erika García and Mario Villarino

ACCSYS – PalmOS Vanguard

With renewed energies we continued with Ing. Jorge Cabrera, General Director of ACCSYS, who in an entertaining way introduced to us all of their equipment, that were by the way very ingenious. We should recognize that is thanks to companies like ACCSYS in Mexico we are also in the technology edge. His wireless camera was a total success; it was tested even in the more distant place of the auditorium, about 40 meters from the receiver, without fails of any kind. The prices of those accessories are very affordable for everyone that wants to implement them in their business or daily activities.

The Raffle (Part 1)

Using the program “Concurso” (by Abraham Estrada) were made most of the raffles.

Poncho’s daughter from HispaPUG Querétaro was selected to press the button to draw the winner of the Tungsten E device, courtesy of pa1mOne México.

Some of the winners in the first day:

Caps: Edgar López, José Guadarrama.

Winner of the Tungsten E: Martha Chin Ramírez.

Mrs. Martha Chin, Rafa Labrada and Ricardo Hdez

Trip to Querétaro sponsored by Sincroniza: Juan Carlos Carreño.

After a very tiring day in the meeting we get some rest, foreigners and some from Mexico City continued the gathering at the well known restaurant chain Sanborn’s, that became the semi official place for meals (even if it wasn’t an sponsor).

Sunday 21st

The beginning was delayed a little, although the ambient remained excellent.

The first conference of the day was Ing. Salvador Casales of INCODE, he presented the products they distribute, among them: Margi Presenter to Go, Documents to Go (we took advantage to solve many of the doubts we had), he also demoed the Spanish Wireless Keyboard that included the “Ñ” key.

Ing. Marutza Medina Morales of iData Wireless, presented the products they develop, emphasizing applications such is the one used by Ciudad Juárez Police Department, very interesting.

Following, Lic. Edilberto Rodríguez (Querétaro’s HispaPUG Coordinator and member of PdaMéxico Staff) gave the coffee cups to the winners of a contest that took place in pdaméxico.net

Ing. Octavio Franco Osorio, coordinator of Mexico State HispaPUG, showed us how to clean up a PDA screen, and demonstrated the usefulness of a product called “Displex” to eliminate scratches and give maintenance to touch screens.

After that, the raffle of more products took place, among the winners: Giovanni Banela, Rafael Labrada, and Alejandro González.

In a pleasant way Lic. Edilberto Rodríguez presented Querétaro’s HispaPUG candidacy to organize 2nd National Meeting, with such an eloquent presentation, it was unanimously voted to organize it. Probable dates are from September 15 to 17 of 2005.

¿Where’s the paper?

When Edilberto finished, it was the moment to raffle all the applications, cases, caps, t-shirts end other remaining articles, the “Concurso” application had an unexpected and unexplainable crash, the hosts decided to do the raffle using pieces of paper, but ¡Surprise! There wasn’t a piece of paper in the auditorium, just PDAs, miraculously a pair of sheets of paper appeared and were cut into pieces and used to raffle the stuff …

Lic. Carlos Octavio Dávalos

Ing. Gustavo Mendoza Tomasis

Surprise Tutorial

When surprises seemed to be over, Accountant Gabriel Campos taught us how to change Treo 600 faceplates, aided by a video camera and the projector, we all see in stupor, how he opened his Treo 600 removing the black faceplate and putting it on Alan Wong’s Treo. An excellent and audacious demonstration.

More raffles

One more time, caps were raffled, more exactly they were given to the ones that wanted them, the caps were kindly donated by Alejandro González. Latter SENA cases were raffled, and the winners were Alan Wong, Iván Ribera and David Uribe. Carlos Octavio Dávalos won a Displex.

Alter that cases sponsored by Piel Frama, well known Spanish PDA cases firm, were raffled among the owners of matching devices. A Treo 600 case was raffled among 6 people; a Tungsten C one among 10 and a Zire 72 case among 10 participants. A Tungsten T3 case was also drawn.

Following some licenses of Kinoma Producer were drawn, the winners were: Alex Gutiérrez, Hugo Cruz, Leticia Román and Juan Carlos.

The winners of the game licenses raffled were: Eduardo Galicia, Francisco Vianney, Oscar Conde, Gustavo Mendoza, Joaquín Carreño, Rafael Labrada, Alex González and Ayela Adame. Other winners were: Octavio Franco, Uriel García, Gabriel Campos, Margarita Molina, Violeta Zavala, José Luís Barceló, Luís Alberto Arjona, Carlos Reyes, Ricardo Hernández y Jorge Pozzi (who donated their prizes), Carlos Dávalos, Ofelia Martínez, Mario Varela, Mario Toledano, Alejandro Rosas and Jorge Rodríguez. They received a coupon to redeem their applications. Among the programs there were mmplayer, VeriChat, and lots more. Being that quantity of winners only some of their names are noted and not their particular prize. As it can be seen there where people that got as much as three prizes. Lucky ones!

Closing Time

Finally Ricardo Hernández had a little closing speech.

An event to remember, the first one of HispaPUG México, and with an attendance of more than 100 people. Coming events will be, for sure, even a greater success, Mexico City HispaPUG set up a great precedent.
